The Westin St. Francis
Brintons and Whitespace Interiors collaborated on 9,500 square yards of custom axminster carpet for the reinvented Westin St. Francis of Union Square.
The challenge with renovating properties with rich historical narratives like the Westin St. Francis is ensuring the contemporary audience remains relevant and isn’t alienated by historic design elements and cultural influences. The custom carpet creates a unifying landscape tying the elements of the times together. Utilizing a healthy break from the monochromatic palettes we’ve seen in the past few years, genius punches of gold and fearless use of white bring these interiors to a contemporary light.
The ballroom carpets of the Westin St. Francis walk the line between restoration and revitalization. Neoclassical elements mix with blended striations in a timelessly elegant gold and navy palette. Ornate gold-leafed ceiling elements, restored from the existing hotel, balance the contemporary public space carpet designs while color palette and the use of repeating geometrics create unity in the contemporary meeting spaces.
Updating a Grande Dame like the Westin St. Francis can be complicated and a thoughtful approach to renovating this iconic hotel was crucial. Whitespace worked closely with Brintons to create modern & dynamic patterns that respect the hotel’s historic origins. Brintons’ design team was an amazingly valuable asset in managing this unique set of conditions. The final outcome was a magnificent installation and an elated client.
